Exploring New Territory

It’s hard to believe it’s already been a year.

A year since I officially graduated my Dawson College photography program.

A year since I left my day job and opened my own business as a freelance photographer.

The days fly by as I tackle new projects and grow my business and my craft. I try to go easy on myself, I always feel somewhat pressured to post more on social media and here on my website. As busy as I am, shooting and editing almost every day, I find myself stressing sometimes that I’m not promoting myself enough, making enough connections, getting my work out there more. When that happens, I find the best thing for me is to get out for a walk. I grab my camera and just try to lose myself in the joy of simply looking around and capturing the marvels all around me.

I recently got to go to Vermont and New York state over Easter weekend. After three years of closed borders it was truly exciting to get out of the country and explore somewhere new. There is something truly transformative about travel, and after being off the table for so long, I think it’s effects on the soul are more potent than ever.

While I am still enjoying the commercial side of photography, I am enjoying these forays into nature and travel photography as of late. Having grown up in a small lakeside town in Lake Echo, Nova Scotia - playing in the woods, exploring for life under rocks and along the shores - mother nature definitely played a part in rearing me. There is something about tromping around in the woods or near a body of water that feels like coming home to me. I think that is a sign that it is something I should definitely pursue it more often, even if only for the enjoyment and the exercise. I work hard all week to please my clients but it’s nice sometimes to take photos that are just for me.
